John M. (Mo) Kenney, CPO, FAAOP assumed the role of President of the ABC Board of Directors on December 1.
As part of ABC’s annual leadership transition, Kenney takes over the presidency from Donald Deane Doty, Jr., CPO of Albuquerque, N.Mex. Doty continues to serve ABC as immediate past president.
“Mo Kenney brings a wealth of experience, both at the board and committee levels of ABC,” said Doty. “I am confident he will be a strong leader for the profession in the upcoming year.”
Kenney became involved with ABC as a volunteer and joined the ABC Board in 2003. He has since played a role in creating many of ABC’s current policies and brings with him nearly17 years of experience working in the orthotic and prosthetic profession. “Mo has-been a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer for ABC for many years. He has provided leadership and support in several of our programmatic areas and I look forward to continuing to work with him during his year as President,” said Catherine Carter, ABC’s Executive Director.
Kenney first decided that he wanted to work in the O&P profession after an unfortunate car accident at the age of seven resulted in the loss of his right leg below-the-knee. “At the time, I thought it was a horrific accident, but now I realize it was a wonderful blessing,” says Kenney. “It gave me guidance and allowed me to pursue a very rewarding career that I enjoy doing every day.”
Kenney received his bachelors from Emory University and attended Northwestern University for his orthotic and prosthetic training. He earned his Certified Prosthetist Orthotist credential from ABC in1995.
Kenney owns and operates four O&P practices, three of which are located in Ky. and one in Indianapolis, Ind. Kenney and his company, Kenney Orthopedics, have been involved in several humanitarian ventures over the years, including two trips to the city of Jhitomir in the Northern Ukraine, about 80 miles from Chernobyl. “Each year we try to give back in some way and provide services that wouldn’t otherwise be available to those in need,” said Kenney.
Kenney and a team of O&P professionals treat about 25 children during each of their week-long stays using prosthetic and orthotic devices that had been donated or purchased by Kenney Orthopedics and then modified to fit the children. Kenney has also provided O&P services to areas of Jamaica and Queretaro, Mexico.
For the past 15 years, Kenney and his wife Jana, a physical therapist, have enjoyed living in the horse capital of the world with their two children, Nicholas, 11, and Jaden, 6. “Our love of horses and the beautiful Kentucky bluegrass has made Kentucky the perfect place for us to live,” said Kenney.
Kenney expressed his excitement at becoming the next President of the ABC Board and his pride for the duties he would soon undertake, stating, “My job is to make sure our credentials are protected and our high standards are maintained. I look forward to working with ABC in overcoming the challenges and accomplishing the goals that will giveway to positive advancements in the O&P profession.”
